Last Thursday CBI organised its first webinar to present the findings of a tailored intelligence study on the market for tropical flowers from Colombia in the Middle East.
The Centre for the Promotion of Import from developing countries (CBI) has asked Milco Rikken from ProVerde to conduct this study especially to provide the Colombian tropical flower companies in CBI’s export coaching program with information on possible export markets for their products, outside of Europe. To increase this trade, market intelligence is needed on promising markets, market channels and segments, buyer requirements and tips for finding buyers.
CBI organised this webinar together with one of its project partners Procolombia. The webinar was a way to reach flower companies in different locations in Colombia all at once. Around 30 companies attended the webinar and were able to ask their questions about the study. Continue reading
Colombia is one of the leading players in the international market for cut flowers. The lion’s share of its flowers are exported to the United States (about 75%), with other markets such as Russia, Japan and various European countries taking less than a quarter. Despite the country’s efforts to differentiate its products and comply with international social and environmental standards, Colombian exports of cut flowers to Europe have been stagnant for decades. Recently, on Thursday 23 May 2013, a second meeting of key stakeholders in the Kenyan-Dutch Horticultural Supply Chain was held in Schiphol, the Netherlands.
Last year, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned a study to obtain detailed insight into the performance of the Kenyan-Dutch horticultural supply chain. As part of a larger project, the study specifically aimed at identifying opportunities for further improvement in the efficiency of the supply chain.
The results of this study have been presented in 2012 to key stakeholders in the supply chain at meetings in Kenya and the Netherlands to share interim results and to obtain feedback in order to develop ideas for pilot projects. Subsequently, there have been exploratory talks with relevant parties who may play a leading role in the implementation of the recommended follow-up projects. Continue reading
In the past months, ProVerde provided marketing assistance to the Palestinian Cash Crops Project. The current Gaza cash crop export sector was evaluated, including shipping, exporting, sales and marketing channels.

The World Bank, in cooperation with the Kenya Flower Council (KFC), organised a series of video conference-based seminars on topics pertaining to competitiveness in the floriculture industry. The 5th seminar, held on the 29th of November 2011, covered the issue of global competitiveness of floriculture production in the East Africa Region. Representatives from Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda participated in the videoconference.
ProVerde was asked to prepare an issue paper on the competitiveness of the Kenyan flower industry and by extension the East African producer’s compared to other global producers and exporters. The paper provided an important contextual and experiential learning point for the other countries involved in the videoconference. In April, about 30 Vietnames exporters participated in a joint CBI and ITPC workshop about Market Research. The course, which was carried out with collaboration by ProVerde, aims to provide exporters with knowledge, skills and tools to collect and analyse data about EU markets, EU buyers, and EU restrictions to export/trade and trade channels.
The market research workshops are designed to be practical and focus around individual and group exercises to complement the short blocks of theory.
This workshop, which was organised for a group of vegetable growers from the Shandong Province in China, focused on strengthening the entrepreneurs’ market orriented approach. Continue reading
With the assistance of Hortiwise, the Uganda Floricultural Association (UFA) is set to pilot the export of local flowers to European markets.
UFA is embarking on the task of getting potential buyers in the European market where in this very month of February, a commercial trial shipment will be conducted to obtain insights on the quality aspects as well as getting feedback from potential buyers in Europe.
